The lock gate at Dundee port is still broken but sealed in the closed position, more than two months after a dramatic incident in which the Frigate Unicorn dropped to the bottom of the harbour.
The wooden warship, which had 20 people on board, had to be evacuated in the emergency at the end of February.
In a technical failure, the Camperdown Dock sea gate could not be fully closed and water rushed through it from Victoria Dock into the River Tay.
With Victoria Dock emptying, the Unicorn and the North Carr lightship fell about eight feet to rest on the harbour floor and remained grounded for more than three hours.
Harbour workers raced to the scene and managed to close the gate. They then allowed water to pour back into the dock and the ships rose to return to their original level.
The problem has not been rectified and a spokesman for the Port of Dundee said: “The lock gate is currently closed while we undertake a full dive and structural survey of the lock gate.
“Once we have this survey report and understand the findings, we will agree the next steps. Safety is paramount for us and we will not take any action with the lock gate until we know the full extent of the survey.”
Identifying the cause of the problem will be part of the survey report.
