A proposed hotel on Marketgait could help meet the demands of a growing number of tourists predicted to flock the to the new £45 million V&A.
The transformation of the waterfront is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of new visitors, requiring an additional 500 extra hotel beds, according to planning officials at Dundee City Council.
Development director Mike Galloway previously said the V&A should encourage investors and would-be hotel operators to plough their money and efforts into the city.
Brunton Design Studio, a Carnoustie architects practice, has risen to the challenge by producing initial proposals and drawings for a new hotel on the Marketgait.
Partner Allan Mudie said: “We were already discussing this possibility with one of our clients and so were able to respond very quickly to Mr Galloway’s appeal.
“It’s an ideal city-centre site within five minutes walk of the V&A, and the initial response from planning officials has been very positive.
“Everything is at a very early stage but if we receive support from the council the hotel could be built and open for business in time for the V&A opening in two years time.”
It is anticipated the ground floor would be a bar and restaurant, with between 60 and 70 bedrooms on the upper floors.
Andrew Dandie, of chartered surveyors Graham & Sibbald, said, “The site, which is on Marketgait, is ideally located, and I am confident we will attract a major hotel operator.
“We are excited by the possibilities presented by this site and would be keen to produce a contemporary building, using environmentally-friendly material and construction methods and harnessing green energy sources. We are also considering a roof garden and restaurant and state of the art conference facilities.”
Valet parking, using existing council car parks, is already planned for the Malmaison Hotel on Dock Street, which is due to open in September.
Mr Mudie said he believes the Marketgait hotel could use the same system.
