Dundee Rep Theatre has cancelled a bid for £60,000 to boost its transformation of the Bonar Hall, as it pursues a “much bigger” funding opportunity.
The theatre initially launched the first month-long application for the five-figure sum on Kickstarter, the arts website where people can make pledges to help projects become a reality, to bolster its plans to upgrade the hall.
But now it has cancelled that bid while it pursues the other funding, details of which are being kept tightly under wraps.
A spokeswoman for Dundee Rep said: “We have recently received very exciting news regarding another funding opportunity which at the moment we unfortunately cannot confirm.
“We are looking at a much bigger fund opportunity and are in the process of application, but it may be early next year before we know the outcome.”
She added: “We are still very much requiring the support from our stakeholders and audiences but at this time we are taking the opportunity to re-examine funding opportunities.
“We are very grateful for the large amount of donations we have recently received from all over the world, helping us get closer to our aspirations for the Bonar Hall and Dundee Rep’s Creative Campus.”
The theatre took over the lease of the hall, part of Dundee University’s campus since 1977, last year and is using it for rehearsals and some performances.
The Rep hopes to establish a Creative Campus specialising in performing arts.
It was awarded £36,000 by Creative Scotland, the national arts and creative industries body, back in September and more money has been promised by the arts body.
Creative Scotland has earmarked £466,000 but Dundee Rep needs to match that figure and needs outside support.
Last month theatre general manager Ian Alexander said: “There are many ways you can support the Creative Campus.
“This could be through legacy giving, donations, sponsorship, advertising or in-kind support (donations of equipment).
“All support will be credited in the foyer of the new building.”
