Images of Dundee’s plans for the National Performance Centre have been unveiled.
The graphics of the £30 million project include Dundee taking on Dundee United on indoor pitches with a state-of-the-art 3G surface, as fans cheers their teams on from special viewing stands built into the walls.
The badge of the Scottish Football Association is emblazoned across the inside of the building, which would become the training base for the country’s national football team.
An aerial view shows the floodlit pitches stretching out across the corner of Camperdown Park, in an area that is currently unused.
The indoor hall will house the covered pitch, which will be situated alongside the venue’s training centre.
But the facilities will not just be used for football, catering for a wide variety of sports.
If Dundee’s bid is successful the centre will receive £25 million of Scottish Government funding and Dundee City Council has pledged to add £5 million to the scheme.
Council chief executive David Dorward said: “This would be our sporting equivalent to the V&A as V&A is to culture, so this would be to sporting ambition.
“A big selling point is the fantastic site, and fantastic design as well we’re very pleased with it.
“The involvement of our two football clubs, who have been very supportive, has been great as well. Our presentation went very well and we have a really strong bid.”
Dundee presented its case for the centre at Hampden Park this week and the Scottish Government will announce the winner in September.
l Dundee residents were yesterday urged to make their nominations in the national search to find the country’s unsung sporting heroes.
The 2013 sportscotland Coaching, Officiating and Volunteering Awards provide the opportunity to recognise the dedication of sportsmen and women across the nation.
Louise Martin, chairwoman of sport-scotland, said: “We recognise that coaches, officials, and volunteers in sport are invaluable, and without their dedication week-in week-out, Scottish sport would struggle to exist.
“The majority of these dedicated individuals give up their own free time to help develop and support the next generation of sporting talent.”
Awards will be presented in nine categories young coach, community coach, development coach, performance coach, young person’s coach, disability coach, technical official, young volunteer, and volunteer.
The closing date for nominations is October 11 and the winners will be announced later in the year.
