A former pub site in Dundee has been transformed into a dozen new council homes as part of a multi-million-pound regeneration of the area.
The £1.4 million development of flats at the corner of Ann Street and Nelson Street in the Hilltown has created the modern new homes on the site of the old Nelson Bar.
Dundee City Council’s housing committee convener John Alexander visited the site on Thursday with Margaret Burgess, Scottish Government Minister for Housing and Welfare.
Mr Alexander said: “These flats are built to lifetime homes standards with lift access to all floors to ensure that people with physical disabilities can be accommodated.
“This investment will help us to meet the demand on housing waiting lists.
“With help from a £240,000 grant from the Scottish Government these homes have been built using high thermal insulation standards, making them easy to heat and reducing energy costs for tenants.
“We want to sustain as many people as we can in their tenancies and homes for as long as possible.”
Mr Alexander said it was just one piece of the overall Hilltown jigsaw.
“Following the blow-down of Bucklemaker and Butterburn Courts at the end of June, and the approval of a new school and community facilities on the site of the former Alexander Street multis, the area has already had a considerable amount of investment,” he said.
“I am delighted that people who live here can see the regeneration becoming a reality.”
The Hilltown Regeneration Framework ensures that unpopular houses are demolished and are replaced by new housing helping to make the area an attractive place to live.
Each six-storey block houses 12 two-bedroom flats.
Ms Burgess said: “Through Scottish Government funding Dundee City Council has been able to regenerate this part of Hilltown, creating highly desirable, affordable and energy-efficient homes.
“We are doing everything possible to stimulate growth, maximise our investment in housing and deliver on our target of 30,000 new, affordable homes over the lifetime of this parliament.
“These new homes will contribute towards providing much needed social housing for Dundee residents.”
