Albert Street traders faced further roadworks misery when the electricity was unexpectedly cut off.
About 100 businesses and homes were left without electricity for an hour after a power cable was damaged by contractors working to replace the gas mains.
The shut-off occurred at 9.35am and lasted until 10.35am. For business owners already losing money because of roadworks, it was a major concern.
George MacKenzie, an Albert Street trader, said people had no idea how long it would last and some were considering closing up shop.
“When it happened people were really angry. Business owners were talking about closing but we decided to wait and see what would happen. We had no idea how long it would last. “
Mr MacKenzie added those affected were upset by the lack of communication from the contractors.
May Gurney, Scotland Gas network’s contractor, is carrying out the essential renewal of the gas mains along the street.
The company had not commented by the time The Courier went to press.
A spokeswoman for Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution said 100 customers, both residential and businesses, were affected.
She said: “At 9.35am we received reports of third party damage to one of our under ground low voltage cables.
“Our engineers attended and supplies were restored by 10.35am.
“We would like to apologise to everyone who was affected.”
