Private companies are to be allowed to sponsor landscaped roundabouts in Dundee.
In return for paying for maintenance, sponsors will be allowed to put up a sign to advertise themselves.
Several Scottish local authorities, including Fife and Aberdeen, already allow this type of advertising and councillors heard that following suit would result in savings for the council’s environment department.
A specialist will be hired to seek suitable sponsors.
However, it has already been decided that companies associated with alcohol, tobacco and any products which contravene the council’s equality and diversity policies will not be eligible.
The city development committee accepted a suggestion by Labour’s Richard McCready that payday loan companies and gambling companies also be banned.
He said: “We have made a strong stand against payday lenders and I think that is something we should continue to do.”
Sponsorship will also not be accepted from any organisation seeking to make a political point which rules out the prospect of roundabouts bearing pro or anti-independence slogans for the next 18 months.
