One-year-old Dundee boy Oliver Bosch, who was born profoundly deaf, is reacting to sound, his mother said today. The youngster has gone to Italy for a major operation to have a hearing device implanted deep inside his brain. The device was switched on today, and his mother Jemma posted this footage on her Facebook page of her son responding to sound. The youngster is seen sitting on Jemma’s lap and looking around him. The clearest sign of Oliver’s reaction comes in at 2:35. Jemma said her son was “reacting to sound for the first time ever.” Oliver was born without auditory nerves and a pioneering operation was needed to fit the hearing device on to his brain stem. A sum of £60,000 was raised to send him to Italy for the surgery which in the UK is normally carried out on older children.
