One of Dundee’s most popular tourist areas had an unusual visitor after a seal pup decided to take a morning wander.
The pup was seen making its way along the public path near the Frigate Unicorn around 6.30am yesterday.
The curious seal was uplifted by members of Broughty Ferry-based Shanwell Marine Animal Rescue Team, who moved it to the slipway beside the Olympia leisure pool.
Shanwell’s fundraising coordinator Stephanie Smith said: “It’s natural for seals to be out of the water to rest or wait for the parent to come back. It’s hauled itself on to the flats and decided to go for a wander…
“It’s obviously been hauling itself along the footpath for some distance. It was fully weaned and uplifted and moved to the slipway beside the Olympia.”
Meanwhile, the team’s efforts to rescue a “stranded” baby porpoise from an Angus beach ended in sadness.
A member of the public reported the small calf in difficulty at Westhaven beach in Carnoustie on Monday.
Shanwell members attended around 6.30pm, but the young animal had died prior to their arrival.
Stephanie said: “It had been there too long to be taken away for a post-mortem and we believe it may have died of natural causes.”
