Street brawl breaks out in Lochee in broad daylight
ByThe Courier Reporter
A mass fight broke out in broad daylight on Lochee High Street.
Police were called after two large groups faced off in the middle of the afternoon. Business owners have claimed people have been left too scared to visit the shopping area due to similar outbreaks of disorder.
Police were called to the street near the Last Tram pub and rival groups scattered, leaving officers scouring the area looking for them.
George Mather, 52, owner of George’s Barber Shop, which sits opposite the scene of the confrontation, said such incidents were affecting trade.
He said: “It’s not very pretty for that to happen anywhere.
“Incidents like that happen all over Dundee, but Lochee seems to have a fair few of them. There’s been quite a few punch-ups on the High Street and we’ve had incidents of handbag thefts in the past.
“It’s damaging for business and puts a lot of people off coming here, especially pensioners. Most of them are too scared to visit the High Street because they’re intimidated.”
Don Gorman, 65, landlord of the Last Tram, said: “Things like that aren’t good for any area.”
