Smokers in Dundee are being urged to quit today and save enough for a summer holiday.
The Smokeline Summer Saver campaign visited the Overgate Shopping Centre and revealed how much smokers could save in time for summer by quitting.
In partnership with Barrhead Travel, the national stop smoking helpline used a pop-up beach to drive home the financial message. A new survey claims the average 14-a-day smoker could save almost £500 in three months.
Hazel Gurvan, 28, who works at Ninewells, smoked 20 cigarettes a day from the age of 21 but quit with the help of local services.
She said: “I was shocked when I realised that I was spending more than £2,700 a year on my habit. When my willpower was waning, I focused on the amount of money I was saving and imagined all the things I could spend that money on.
“Within just two months of quitting, I was able to go on holiday with my mum to Tenerife with £300 spending money. Instead of buying duty free cigarettes, I treated myself to a luxury bottle of perfume. I can’t believe the amount of money which used to go up in smoke.”
The new Holiday Savings Calculator allows people to find out how much they could save.
