Public sector workers are due to walk out at the start of a long weekend of action in protest against cuts to pay, pensions and working conditions.
Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) will be involved in action which is part of a three-month programme of national and local strike action and protests involving a quarter of a million public sector staff.
Staff at the DWP Pension Centre and the Jobcentre in Dundee will join tens of thousands in protest across the UK from 1pm. Of the Pension Centre’s 500 staff, more than 400 of them are expected to take a half day.
A spokesman for the striking workers in Dundee said: “We expect about 80% to 85% of staff to leave the Pension Centre to join the industrial action.
“Since coming into office, this Government has slashed jobs in the civil service despite increasing workloads which are a result of its own austerity measures.
“In real terms, civil servants face a reduction in pay, a product of pay freezes, increased pension contributions and now face an assault on their terms and conditions.
“We are proud, hard-working civil servants who have been left with no choice but to strike because of this Government’s refusal to enter into meaningful negotiations.
“Our members want to continue to provide a first-rate service people deserve, not the third-rate service this Government wants to impose.
“Further action is being considered over the coming months should the Government not enter into meaningful negotiations.”
According to the union, members in key workplaces including the Scottish Government, courts, procurator fiscals, Identity and Passport Office, registrars and museums will join in the action.
HM Revenue and Customs staff will take part in a half-day strike on Monday morning.
