A group of Travellers have moved on from an unofficial camp on the western outskirts of Dundee after legal action by the landowners.
The site agent reportedly obtained a legal possession order for the camp at Dundee Technology Park.
Travellers had been on the land next to the former General Accident call centre for a week.
The land is owned by Aviva Investors. No one from the firm was available for comment.
One of the Travellers told The Courier that he and another caravan had moved to the official site at Balmuir but, as far as he understood, the rest of the Travellers were moving to set up camp at the former airfield at Crail in Fife.
The council’s environment convener Craig Melville said it was “encouraging” Travellers were using the official site.
“We are thankful that they have decided to use the official site as this is what we’ve asked them to do all along,” he said.
The group of Travellers had set up four illicit sites in Dundee before their latest move.
The council was forced to foot a five-figure sum for a clean-up after they left sites in the northern outskirts of the city and the two more recent sites strewn with rubbish.
Mr Melville said the local authority was looking at ways of dealing with the issues thrown up by Traveller encampments.
“What we are currently doing as an administration group is putting together a more formal policy on how to deal with the Travellers,” he said.
“We are going to try and take a more pragmatic and robust approach in terms of the issues they throw up.
“There’s one argument that says we should be providing them with skips but then another argument that points out we don’t provide private businesses with skips.
“We need to strike a balance between looking at the financial implications and the environmental implications.”
A spokesman for the council said: “A group of Gypsy/Travellers has arrived at Balmuir Wood and we are continuing to liaise with them.”
