Developers of a former factory site in Dundee say members of the public are happy something is finally being done to transform the long-vacant brownfield site.
On Wednesday night, around 40 people attended a public consultation by I&H Brown on the plans to build a new food shop, pub/restaurant, coffee shop, drive-through and office facilities at the East Kingsway Works.
Marc Giles, a representative of Ryden Property Consultants, who carried out the consultation, said the developers were very pleased with the turnout and the mostly positive feedback.
Those who attended included local residents, business owners and a group of school children.
Mr Giles said: “I think people want to see something happen here. It has been a vacant site for a long time and the fact that something might happen here is being seen as a big positive.
“People also seem quite happy about the commercial aspects of it and one of the messages we received is that people will use it. Local jobs would be created here and the contribution to Dundee’s economic welfare has got to be positive.”
The commercial units on the development have already attracted interest from potential occupiers, some of whom attended the consultation.
The area has been marketed as an employment site for some time and it is hoped the commercial units will act encourage businesses to occupy the land.
While Mr Giles said the majority of feedback was positive there was concern raised about the increased traffic on the junctions coming out of the site.
“It is still very early stages but it is important to get a feel for what people want to see there,” he added.
People also handed in around 30 feedback forms with comments on the plans, which will be considered ahead of a formal planning application for the site, likely be submitted to Dundee City Council in early July.
If approved, a more detailed application will have to be submitted and developers hope work could start by summer next year, with the facilities completed by the following year.
