Dundee’s tennis courts could be set to be served up a £42,000 investment.
Fairmuir and South Road courts would be targeted for the bulk of the investment, while other repairs would be carried out across the city in the early stages of an action plan.
The council’s environment committee’s meeting on Monday will hear of plans to upgrade city courts.
Councillors will also hear that there have been talks with Tennis Scotland, the Lawn Tennis Association and other partners to drive forward the sport.
Depute environment convener Vari McDonald said: “There is no doubt that the success of Andy Murray has helped inspire Dundee tennis enthusiasts to get out and get playing.
“We have seen a significant investment in sporting facilities across Dundee in recent years and I am keen that tennis can also benefit.
“There have been a number of activities to encourage young players and I would like that to be matched by the quality of courts.
“There are a number of longer-term improvements that we have identified, however there are changes that can be made now to enhance the situation.
“The council is also looking to attract external funding which will help deliver even more improvements in council facilities. We are keen that both the east and west of the city could have tennis centres.”
Dundee MSP Jenny Marra, who has campaigned for better tennis courts in the city, said news of the potential investment was “very welcome”.
She said: “I started this campaign last summer after Andy Murray’s tennis success because I want children in Dundee to have as many opportunities as possible to fulfil their potential and get involved in sport.
“The Victorians put tennis courts in parks across Dundee but so many of them have fallen into disrepair. I’m especially pleased that the council is resurfacing the tennis court in Lochee.
“Lochee’s court is in the worst condition of all and it is not good enough for children in Menzieshill, Charleston and Lochee to have substandard facilities.
“I look forward to the opening of the new court and seeing children playing more sport.”
