Carpets from the recently closed Hilton Hotel at Dundee’s waterfront are being recycled and used to help disadvantaged people in the community.
The social enterprise Clean Carpet Company has completed recovery of 100 good quality carpets from the former hotel and has been fitting them at a reduced rate in people’s homes.
The hotel has now been vacated and is under the control of Dundee City Council until it is demolished to make way for the £45 million V&A development.
Alex Fyffe, general manager of Clean Close Co, said the group is recycling carpets, which would otherwise be sent to landfill, for a good cause.
He said: “We now have 100 carpets which will be fitted at a very low cost for people in the community and we are very grateful to Dundee City Council which gave us the opportunity to acquire these.
“They have already been a benefit to people in the community who otherwise could not afford carpet.
“It does make a big, big difference and puts the finishing touches to the home. These are all really good quality carpets and we sanitise them so they are safe for children to roll about on.”
The scheme works by taking referrals from housing associations and Dundee City Council. People can then visit the showroom at 96-98 Broughty Ferry Road to choose from a range of donated carpets starting from £2.50 per square metre.
Since the Clean Carpet Company, part of the Clean Close Co, started 18 months ago it has recovered 100 tonnes of carpet.
Mr Fyffe added: “The project has a three-pronged approach as we are diverting from landfill, fitting carpet at a low cost to people in the community and creating jobs.”
The not-for-profit organisation is always looking for donations and if any businesses are undergoing a refit and no longer need old carpets the project would like to hear from them.
