The banter warming up in The Fisherman's beer garden on Friday night.

Hundreds of beer and music fans converged on a sunny Fort Street in Broughty Ferry as the 14th annual Ron Bonar Festival at the Fisherman’s Tavern met the Fort Hotel’s Big Weekend.

Dozens of bands and solo acts are performing over the weekend at the two popular pubs, which are aiming to raise thousands of pounds for charity through the events.

The music kicked off on Friday at the Fort at 5.30pm with the traditional outdoor Celtic Session, before RTK9000 and Revolver carried the music through until the early hours.

Meanwhile at the Fish, Cutting Corners and Colour Coded provided the musical delights.

Fisherman’s manager Tracey Cooper said: “Over the past 14 years the beer festival has raised over £120,000 and last year alone we raised £8,500 for the RNLI.

“All the bands play for nothing and lots of local companies give us fantastic help to make the festival such a success.

“The weather forecast for Saturday is cracking and it looks good for Sunday as well.

“As well as the £5 entry fee, local companies are asked to sponsor a keg of beer and this year we’ve got 38 different kegs. Belhaven, who own the Fish, have bought 10 kegs themselves. All the money goes to the RNLI.”

Among the other acts playing in the beer garden at the Fisherman’s today and on Sunday are Sunstorm, Malcolm’s Cardigan, Sleepers and Delilah and the Samsons.

The Fort Hotel, meanwhile, hosts more than 20 different acts, with a barbecue today and tomorrow, the proceeds from which will go to the Maggie’s Centre.

Mine host at the Fort John Black said: “This is our seventh Big Weekend and it’s the biggest line-up yet. We’ve got 21 acts and three DJs over the weekend, and two cup finals.”

Sandwiched between the bands and solo artists are the Champions League final tonight, followed by the Scottish Cup final on Sunday.

“It’s our busiest weekend of the year and there are between two and a half and three thousand people coming and going, especially if the weather is good,” John added.

“Our two barbecues are raising money for the Maggie’s Centre. Last year it raised £1,500 for Caring for Kids and hopefully this year we can beat that amount.”

Among the acts taking part are Darren Campbell, Dave?, Velvet Audio and Jack Rabbit Slims tonight, and Amber Road, Emerald Sunday, Ryan Russell (Shuggy) and the Broon Troot Orchestra on Sunday.
