‘People find it extraordinary’ residents want answers on £80 West End parking permit proposal

A councillor says it was vital a public meeting was held to discuss the West End residents’ parking scheme proposal.

Liberal Democrat Fraser Macpherson was speaking in the wake of a four-hour drop-in consultation event at Blackness Library on Monday, which gave people the chance to view the city council’s proposals.

He said: ”The exhibition was well attended, but what is very clear from speaking with residents is that they want a proper public meeting at which the plans can be discussed and questions answered.

”The council is currently planning no public meeting, and at last week’s West End community council I raised this concern.

”The community council is therefore inviting the council’s head of transportation to its next meeting. This is a public meeting, and I hope he will accept the invitation.”

Mr Macpherson is urging residents to email westendresidentsparking@dundeecity.gov.uk or return the questionnaire they have been sent by the council.

”Without wishing to prejudge the final outcome of the consultation exercise, I do have to say that it’s very clear speaking with the residents who have contacted me that people find it extraordinary that the council is suggesting an £80 charge for West End residents whilst retaining a charge of only £5 for another residents’ scheme in Dundee.

”If the council is willing to subsidise a parking scheme in another part of Dundee, it should show equality and do the same across the board.”

Labour councillor Richard McCready said: ”There was a good turnout at the meeting in Blackness Library, but it represented only a small proportion of the people of the West End.

”As a local resident I am aware of some of the concerns that people have been raising. I know that people are concerned about the cost, about whether this will merely move the problem, about whether they can get visitors or deliveries and about the impact on local businesses.

”I will certainly be expecting the report on the consultation to include these matters.”
