Former Dundee United player Charlie Adam senior whose namesake son plays football for Stoke City and Scotland has been found dead at his home in Fintry.
The news of the tragedy circulated quickly round the city last night and was received in shock and disbelief.
Adam, who was 50, played for other local clubs, most notably Brechin City. He closely followed the career of his son as he reached the top of the British game as well as that of younger son Grant, a goalkeeper with St Mirren.
Speaking at the family home, Grant confirmed the tragic news but asked for the family to be left to mourn in private.
It is understood that Charlie junior was travelling north from England to be with his family in Dundee.
A spokeswoman for Tayside Police said officers attended a house in the Fintry area about 6pm after the discovery of the body of a 50-year-old man.
She said: “There are no suspicious circumstances and, as with all sudden deaths, a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.”
