PUPILS AT a Dundee school narrowly missed being caught up in a fire drama when a light fitting fell to the floor and ignited the carpet.
The incident happened at Dens Road Primary School when the pupils were out for lunch on Monday and no-one was in the second-floor classroom.
The fire alarm sounded in the school about 12.45pm, and the teacher of the class went to her room to find the carpet ablaze.
The light fitting, complete with wiring, had fallen from the ceiling and the sparks from it had caused the carpet to catch fire.
Two units from Tayside Fire and Rescue’s Macalpine Road station rushed to the scene, and the crews put the blaze out using CO2 extinguishers.
Crew manager Grant Foreman said an area about 4 sq ft was damaged.
“The light fitting landed on the carpet and didn’t come into contact with desks or any other property,” he said.
“It seemed to be a completely chance occurrence that the fitting came down when it did.
“We have no idea at this stage why the light fitting came loose and fell this will be investigated.
“This happened when the pupils were out for lunch, and only the teacher was in the classroom at the time.”
A spokesman for Dundee City Council confirmed that the cause of the incident is under investigation and that no-one was injured.
He added that the pupils of the class have been moved to another room for a few days until their classroom is safe for them to return.
