Hardy Broughty Ferry dookers take the plunge to see in 2013
ByThe Courier Reporter
Thousands of folk flocked to Broughty Ferry to cheer on the 430 brave dookers as they plunged into the harbour for the annual New Year’s Day Dook.
The water temperature was a chilly 2C, but that did little to dampen the spirit of the dookers.
Joyce McIntosh, president of Ye Amphibious Ancients Bathing Association, which organises the Dook, joined David Philp of Gillies and John Black of the Fort to lead everyone down the slipway to the sound of the 44th Boys Brigade pipe band.
She said: “I’m overwhelmed by the support. The wind’s a bit much but the weather’s good.”
Lord Provost Bob Duncan said: “It’s a fantastic turnout. I don’t think this event could go ahead without the fantastic organisation of Joyce McIntosh and all her helpers. It’s unbelievable to see so many supporters to cheer them on.”
The Broughty Ferry New Year’s Day Dook, which can boast being the largest in Scotland, dates back to 1891 and has never been cancelled, no matter the weather.
