REDEVELOPMENT of a disused textiles mill will provide more homes for affordable rent than originally expected, Dundee City Council has said.
Funding of £7 million has been approved for 75 flats at the former Wallace Craigie Works in Broughty Ferry Road. There are plans to borrow another £2.5m to pay for a further 24 flats.
Housing convener Jimmy Black said: “I am delighted that we have been able to increase to 99 the total number of new flats that will fill a gap for mid-market rented housing in the city.
“These are aimed mostly at people who are struggling to get a mortgage because of the credit crunch.
“The rents will be dearer than council rents but low for the private market.”
The council is partnering with developer Keiller Estates and the Scottish Government’s National Housing Trust to build the flats, which will range from one to four bedrooms.
They will be rented for up to 10 years before being sold, either to sitting tenants, a housing association or on the open market.
