A 48-year-old man had to be rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out in his sheltered home.
The man was taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering smoke inhalation at his flat at 64 Dykehead Place in Dundee.
Firefighters doused the flames in the living room before removing the man from the flat.
Police said the man was kept overnight in the short stay ward at Ninewells Hospital for observation.
Sonya Smart (42), who lives a neighbouring block, said she had been out when the fire took hold but was contacted by her teenage daughters to say they were safe.
“They said there was a fire in the house next door but they were OK,” she said.
“I just got back and the house looks a real mess. It’ll be a while before he gets back in there.
“I hope he’s OK. I only know him to say hello to on the way past. He goes about on a zimmer and he’s quite slow getting about. But I haven’t seen him out and about for a long time.”
Watch Manager Stephen Caird from Kingsway Fire Station said the flames were contained in the living room, although it was well alight when they arrived on the scene shortly before 8pm on Wednesday.
“It was quite a severe fire in the ground-floor flat and firefighters used breathing apparatus and removed the casualty and gave him oxygen until the ambulance arrived shortly afterwards.”
No one else was injured in the incident.
