A new campaign has been launched by Shelter Scotland to ensure the private rented housing sector is fairer for all.
The Rethink Renting campaign hopes to increase renting tenancy agreements to avoid families being forced to move house on a regular basis.
Although there is a greater choice of housing for those who rent privately, it does not offer a stable environment for young families as some tenancy contracts only last for six months.
Shelter Scotland’s research has highlighted that private renting has almost doubled in size in less than five years, with 12,000 privately rented households in Dundee and almost 6,000 people on the waiting list for a council property.
Shelter Scotland director Graeme Brown said that longer tenancy agreements would provide more stability for tenants.
“Short-term tenancy agreements do not provide the stability and security individuals and, in particular, young families in Dundee, need in order to live a settled life and bring up children,” he said.
Mr Brown also believes everyone will benefit from the change.
He said: “The benefits would not just be felt by tenants. Landlords, too, would see a more constant and predictable income with less downtime between rents and happier, more stable relationships with their tenants.”
