Former Dundee businessman William Dron dies aged 87

A Dundee businessman who took part in the invasion of Normandy has passed away.

William Dron, known as Bill, died at Riverview Lodge Care Home in Newport after a short illness aged 87.

Before retiring in 1986 Mr Dron was chief executive of Tay Valley Housing Association and previously spent many years as director of Lamb’s Garage in Trades Lane.

Mr Dron was born in Rothiemay, Lochee.

He rose through the ranks of the Boys’ Brigade before joining the Cameron Highlanders, serving a tour of Northern Ireland before he was drafted into the 5th Battalion Black Watch which took him to Normandy.

Mr Dron was also a member of the 51st Highland Division Massed Bands which opened the Victory Parade celebrations in London in 1946.

After demobilisation he returned to Dundee and worked at Jute Industries before moving on to Logan Mining Machinery in Lochee.

After he retired Mr Dron kept busy attending classes at Dundee and St Andrews Universities. He enjoyed painting and playing the clarinet.

He joined Dundee University’s Return to Study course and served as chairman on the committee for the Association of Extra Mural Students before a lack of mobility eventually forced him to quit in 2003.

Mr Dron’s wife Vina died and he is survived by his daughter Lesley, sons Steve and Ian, grandson Cameron and granddaughter Ritchie.

All those who knew Mr Dron are invited to wear bright colours to his funeral, which will be held on Wednesday at 12.30pm at the rooms of Sturrock, Comb and Davidson, in Lochee followed by a burial at Balgay Cemetery.
