DUNDEE CITY Council has promised to replace an area of raised slabs in a busy shopping street, after a pensioner suffered a nasty fall.
Ex-pat Courier reader Karen Milne got in touch after witnessing an elderly man tripping on the Cowgate while she was home for Christmas.
The “badly shaken” man suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to Ninewells Hospital for assessment.
Ms Milne, a staff nurse living in Saudi Arabia, called on the council to carry out a survey of the city centre to prevent similar accidents happening in the future.
She said: “I came home to Dundee on December 20 and throughout our Christmas shopping my sister would point out to me the number of raised paving slabs around Dundee city centre.
“When I was doing some final shopping with my nephew we noticed a gentleman on the ground in front of Deja Vu in the Cowgate. He had tripped on one of the raised slabs.
“I immediately went to assist, as I am a registered staff nurse. We asked the necessary questions and called an ambulance to assist.
“He was badly shaken and had some cuts and bruises but otherwise he seemed fine.
“He was a lovely man and I hope he made a speedy recovery.”
She added: “During this episode at least four people came over to us and explained they had also tripped on the same slab the day before. I think Dundee City Council really has to maintain our streets in Dundee.
“Walking around the city centre for the first time in two years, I felt our streets had deteriorated in a tragic manner.
“I would appeal to the council to have a full assessment of our city centre to resolve this issue and ensure this kind of incident does not occur in the future.”
A spokesman for the city council said: “These slabs will be replaced as soon as possible.”
