Clear-up of rubble at Alexander Street gets under way

After Sunday’s spectacular demolition the hard work of clearing the rubble of the Alexander Street multis has begun.

Heavy machinery moved into the Hilltown site as the arduous task of clearing the remains of the Carnegie, Jamaica, Maxwelltown and Wellington towers got under way.The four buildings were razed to the ground at the weekend in an event that has dramatically altered the Dundee skyline. The aftermath was still perfectly visible on the surrounding streets with a thin ivory-coloured dust covering much of the landscape, creating the impression that winter had arrived early to the city.Street sweepers had been deployed in the immediate aftermath of the collapse to tackle the worst of the stoor, although what remains is likely to be washed away by rain in the coming days. The demolition was conducted by Safedem, whose managing director William Sinclair expects the clear-up operation to take around 20 weeks.Much of the material removed from the site is expected to be recycled within the construction industry.Meanwhile, thousands of people have used the power of the internet to relive the historic collapse of the four towers. The demolition has become a hit on the YouTube website with dozens of clips having been uploaded by spectators.A collection of the best videos are available on The Courier’s website at www.thecourier. co.uk./
