A former Harris Academy pupil, who now studies industrial design at university in Uruguay, has beaten off competition from more than 1000 people from 18 countries around the world to win a design competition in Brazil.
Timothy Goodman, who was a first-year pupil at the Dundee school in 1993-94 before moving with his parents to live in South America, has been awarded first prize in the student category in the international Salao contest.
Speaking from his home in Uruguay shortly before he flew out last Wednesday, he said, “As part of our course (industrial design, ORT University, Montevideo), we were given a project based along the lines of the competition Salao design.
“Each person in the class developed their own product based on the requirements of the competition so that’s where I developed the stool.
“The first stage was to send a digital file of our project. Mine was then selected by a panel of judges and I was then required to construct a real-scale functional model of my design that would be sent to be re-evaluated by the judges. After a month or so I was told I had won in my specific category.”
Timothy (29) said that although the prize money was only around $300, the award would hopefully lead to further commissions in the industrial design world.
