The closure of Royal Mail’s parcel office in Dundee city centre is being protested to the UK Government.
Richard McCready, Labour councillor for the West End ward, has written to business secretary Vince Cable to raise his concerns about the impact on customers.
He is also seeking a meeting with Royal Mail managers.
From August 29 customers will no longer be able to collect undelivered parcels from the Crichton Street office.
Instead those with DD1 postcodes will have to go to the central delivery office in Edward Street and those in the DD2 and DD3 areas to the western delivery office in Baird Avenue.
Mr McCready said, “I am really disappointed that Royal Mail have made this decision. I think it is wrong.
“I accept that the shop at Crichton Street required some work to bring it up to modern-day standards but I do not think this was beyond Royal Mail.”‘Excellent links’ lostHe added, “Crichton Street has excellent links to public transport the same cannot be said for the new locations.”
The closure has been criticised by Courier readers who posted messages on our website.
One wrote, “Baird Avenue is a nightmare to get to on public transport” and another asked, “Why can’t Royal Mail open a new office in the town centre?”
Another said, “Like many others I don’t drive and rely on this depot in Crichton Street to pick up mail at lunch time because I work 9am to 5pm in town.”
The loss of the office is also due to be discussed by the city councillors at their meeting on August 22.
