A Dundee company that sells a cream it claims can remove tattoos has been told there is no proof the product actually works.
Internet firm tattooremovalcream.co.uk has been told by the Advertising Standards Authority to remove “misleading” claims from the website about the effectiveness of its LazerCream lotion.
The firm, which operates from an address in Union Street, charges £179.99 for a 12-month supply of the product.
It claims an ingredient, glyconic acid, breaks down pigmentation in the skin and the tattoo will eventually fade away.
According to the company’s website, “The LazerCream system is the simplest, most affordable and convenient of any tattoo removal method available in the world.”
But the ASA said the claim breached their “substantiation” and “exaggeration” rules.
“We told tattooremovalcream.co.uk not to make any claims that implied their product could remove tattoos, unless they held robust scientific evidence to demonstrate otherwise.”
However the firm’s marketing manager, Paul Harkins, said, “The thing is we had trials done in America but they don’t stand up because they were done in the US, not the UK.
“If we do them here they will take a year to complete, so there is not much we can do but change the wording and put advice on it saying trials were done in the US.”
