Dundee’s education convener has said “every effort” has been made to improve road safety at the new Eastern Primary School.
Liz Fordyce said the changes followed a thorough assessment of the needs of pupils, who have already said goodbye to their Whinnybrae home and will take over part of the old Grove Academy building at the start of the new term.
The primary will open next Thursday one day later than all other city schools come back from the summer holidays.
Ms Fordyce said, “We are making every effort to ensure a range of safety measures are in place for Eastern Primary moving in to its new accommodation.
“The project board, which was set up to consider issues around the move of Eastern, looked at the road situation thoroughly.”
She added, “We would ask parents and families to consider the safety of their own children and of other pupils when they are travelling to school.
“I am very pleased at the way that the majority of drivers have responded to the Don’t Park Here campaign. Many have changed their habits and are dropping their children off at a point away from the school so they can walk the rest of the way.”Safety measuresAction being taken on roads around the school include installing dropped kerbs and SLOW markings on the westbound approach of Queen Street.
At the Queen Street/Camphill Road junction the west kerb has been moved to improve visibility and cut crossing width and the barrier replaced with visi-rail.
Signs and flashing amber lights have been introduced at the Fort Street-Hill Street junction, along with carriageway resurfacing to improve skid resistance and SLOW markings.
The Church Street-Seafield Road junction has seen pavement surface improvements and refurbishment of the pedestrian islands to discourage U-turns, along with refreshed road markings and dropped kerbs.
Limited waiting has been introduced on the west side of Church Street to remove unrestricted parking and additional dropped kerbs have been provided at Claypotts Road.
Crossing patrollers are being provided at five locations and a travel plan will be developed for the primary and adjacent Grove Academy.
Eastern is being moved after the city council learned its old home needed expensive repairs.
