Council under fire for failing to replace schools’ lollipop patrollers

Parents at two primaries have resumed the school run only to discover their lollipop people are gone.

School crossing patrollers at Forthill Primary School and Claypotts Castle Primary School both retired in June but the city council failed to replace them in time for the schools going back after the summer.

Paula Morelli, from the Dores Drive area of Broughty Ferry, has already noticed the loss of the crossing patroller who used to help her children cross the busy Balgillo Road to Forthill.

She said: “We would really like a new lollipop lady. We miss her a lot.

“I have two children in P1 and P4 and I take them to school all the time but it takes a lot longer to cross Balgillo about twice as long. It feels less safe with her gone.”

Communications manager Debbie Richardson also has two children at Forthill and said she was worried that the council was sending out contradictory messages.

“It’s difficult not having her when they are trying to encourage the children to walk to school too,” she said.

Labour’s education spokesman, Councillor Laurie Bidwell, whose ward covers both primary schools, is backing the parents.

“The council knew about these retirements dates. I share the concerns of parents and will be firing off a letter to the director about it immediately,” he said.

A spokesman for the council said: “The council is aware and we are trying to resolve these situations.”
