Green Circular Route improvements part of effort to reconnect the city to the waterfront

Dundee’s Green Circular cycle route is to be altered to improve links between the waterfront and the city centre.

Outdoor access officer John Whyman said the changes part of the waterfront redevelopment would increase access to green spaces.

Mr Whyman said: “Part of the ethos behind the redevelopment of the city waterfront was reconnecting the city to the waterfront.

“The new layout should ensure easier cycle access along the waterfront and more options for cycling and walking to the city centre, with more crossings and pleasant spaces along the way.”

He added: “Cyclists always want the most direct route, and these links will help achieve that. They will be safe and easy to use and hopefully, as a result, more people will use the circular.”

The Green Circular was opened in 1995, and at the time was the only walking and cycling route around a UK city. The 26-mile circular has been described as a necklace, linking Dundee’s most beautiful parks and open spaces.

Mr Whyman said: “The whole idea behind the Green Circular was to link the green gems around Dundee. It includes Templeton Woods, Camperdown Country Park, Caird Park and the Dighty and the new Riverside Nature Park is the latest on the circular.”

Mr Whyman said there will also be regular maintenance.

He said: “Sections of path have been widened and resurfaced and cycle parking racks installed. We have also re-examined crossing points to make it safer and easier for cyclists to access.”

He added: “We’re very proud of the green circular it links all the wonderful sites and green spaces of Dundee, it’s safe, it’s healthy and it’s cheap.”
