Spectators at Dens Park got two sports for the price of one at the weekend.
A tug of war challenge was held during the Dundee v Hamilton game to promote organ donation and highlight how it can help people with serious illnesses lead a normal life again.
Transplant patients who are members of the charity Revival Tayside took part in the event, including former Dundee City Council chief executive Alex Stephen and Ronnie McIntosh, who has been nominated to carry the Olympic torch when it passes through the city.
They were helped out by special guest Joe FitzPatrick, Dundee City West MSP, who also manned an information stall about organ donation.
Revival Tayside sends a team to the British transplant games every year. The event was part an initiative by Dundee FC to highlight a local charity at every home game this season, part of a desire by the Dundee FC Supporters’ Society to engage with the community and give voice to local charities.
The society’s community director Jacqui Robertson said: “Having already worked alongside local celebrity and Dundee fan Ronnie Mcintosh last season we didn’t have to think twice about working alongside Revival in highlighting an emotive issue like organ donation.
“If one person signs up as a donor, one or more lives can potentially be saved.”
At any given time there are around 600 people in Scotland waiting for a transplant. Three people a day die in the UK because no donor organ has been found for them.
