A project to gauge the impact of prostitution in the Stobswell area of Dundee got under way this week.
It will see outreach workers trying to find out more about the people who have found themselves caught up in the sex trade.
The project is called No-1 (no one) and is being run jointly by local charities Eighteen And Under and Izzy’s Promise. It is targeting Stobswell as it has become a hotspot for prostitution in recent years.
Spokesman Keiran Watson said: ”We are starting the street work with consultations to try and build a clearer picture of prostitution in Dundee and those involved. We are interested in the number of people working as sex workers, whether they are male or female, what age and so on.
”There is some information out there but, depending on who you talk to, even the most basic information will vary.
”Once we have a clearer picture of the scale of the issue and those involved we will be able to really focus our prevention and support work to help people.”
The launch comes in the wake of an announcement by police that they are stepping up patrols in Stobswell to tackle kerb-crawling and other issues. Six alleged offenders have been detained in the past few weeks.
In addition to the street work, No-1 will also be offering workshops for school pupils on the problems of exploitation and human trafficking.
