The chairman of the Whitehall Theatre Trust has stepped down, now that the future of the venue is on a firmer footing.
Derek Shaw has handed the reins to Lord Provost John Letford.
Mr Shaw praised everyone who helped to save the theatre after its future was put in doubt when its operating company went into liquidation earlier this year.
He said: ”As chairman of the Whitehall Theatre Trust I received enormous support and encouragement from the people of Dundee and along with many volunteers we were able to reopen the theatre in time for Dundee schools to perform a wonderful show.
”Along with (volunteer manager) Gordon Philip I stood at the back of the theatre and both of us agreed all the hard work and sleepless nights were well worth it. Once again, we had a theatre.”
He added: ”Having achieved along with Gordon my target of saving the theatre for the future, I have now stood down from the position of chairing the trust and I wish the theatre all the very best for a long and successful future.”
Mr Shaw said: ”There would not have been a theatre in the first place had it not been for all the wonderful volunteers who gave so freely of their time and energy to open the theatre and raise funds some 26 years ago, some of whom are still involved to this day.
”Now a new team will take the theatre forward.”
Dundee City Council has backed a one-year pilot to keep the theatre open, including spending £30,000 to hire a duty manager.
The education department will book the theatre for shows by Dundee Schools Music Theatre, while ticket and box office services and liaising with promoters will be carried out by Leisure and Culture Dundee.
The trust will own the building and ensure it is fit for purpose but the council will help develop a business plan.
Mr Letford said all involved in the theatre owed a debt of gratitude to Mr Shaw.
