A device which sparked a bomb scare in Dundee and forced the closure of roads in the Dura Street area has been removed for safe disposal.
Tayside Police had advised people to avoid the area after a police officer was handed what appears to have been an old hand grenade by a member of the public.
The officer was given the suspicious item shortly after 3pm and immediately alerted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). It is understood the hand grenade had been dug up by a man several years ago in the Dundee area and was handed to police after being found by a family member.
It was placed on waste ground as safe a distance as possible from nearby housing while police closed roads in the immediate area and set up a security cordon.
Shortly after 6pm, police confirmed that the EOD team, which had been called from Montrose, had removed the object for safe disposal. Roads were quickly reopened and the exclusion zone removed.
Police thanked the public for their patience during the incident, which disrupted evening traffic and left some local residents unable to get into their homes.
The incident comes just days after a local man drove across the city to Broughty Ferry with a suspected mortar, which proved to be a false alarm. For more on Tuesday evening’s drama see Wednesday’s Courier.
