The Dalai Lama will make a historic visit to Dundee this year to deliver a lecture on the importance of love and compassion.

The visit is the result of six years of work by the Edinburgh Inter-Faith Association, which is coordinating the visit, and Dundee University chaplain Rev Dr Fiona Douglas.

Thousands of people are expected to hear the him speak during his tour of the UK.

The spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism has been exiled from his home country since 1959 after an uprising against the ruling Chinese government was quashed.

Offered refuge in Indian, he founded a government in exile in the northern Indian town of Dharamshala.

Since his exile he has become an internationally renowned figure advocating Tibetan independence and Buddhism.

Now aged 76, he will visit Dundee on June 22 to deliver the Margaret Harris Lecture on religion as a guest of Dundee University and Dundee City Council.

He will give his talk, Education of the heart: a new world order of compassion, at the Caird Hall.

He will also visit Edinburgh and Inverness during his visit to Scotland between 21 and 24 June.

He will arrive in the UK a week earlier and take part in several public programmes in Manchester and London before moving north of the border.

Upon his arrival in Dundee, he will be welcomed to the city by a pipe band and members of the public.

He will then deliver his talk as a highlight of a week of graduation ceremonies.

His talk will focus on the message that developing compassion is crucial to the development of humankind.

Professor Pete Downes, principal and vice-chancellor of Dundee University, said: ”It will be an honour to welcoming His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Dundee, and truly a privilege to have him deliver the Margaret Harris Lecture on Religion.

”His visit will enhance understanding of all faiths and cultures and help promote relations between these different groups.

”Cultivating love and compassion is central to the Dalai Lama’s teaching, and his talk presents a rare opportunity for people in the city to hear from one of the world’s most influential spiritual leaders.”

Tickets for the Caird Hall lecture will cost £25, £15 or £10 and will be available from February 1. They can be purchased from the Dundee City Box Office, City Square, by calling 01382 434940, or by visiting dundeebox.co.uk.
