A Dundee fund-raiser has braved torrential rain and high winds in an effort to pay for the “holiday of a lifetime” for a seriously ill six-year-old boy.

Charlie Kean of Kean’s Children’s Fund was out collecting for Michael Purvey, also known as Mikey, who has battled against cancer since he was 15 months old.

Charlie contacted the family to offer his help and yesterday held a day of car washing outside the city’s ice arena with the help of Tayside Fire and Rescue.

While the poor weather meant much of the event had to be cancelled, volunteers remained at the Camperdown Leisure Park until midnight to collect bucket donations.

All funds will go towards a target of around £5000 to pay for a trip to Florida for Mikey and his grandparents and guardians, Rab (50) and Donna (47) Purvey from Coldside.

Charlie said, “We have made around £2000 over the last week but we really need £4000 or £5000 to pay for it all and then the insurance costs another £1000 because his health is so poor.

“The weather has meant the car wash didn’t go too well, but we have had people out with collection buckets and I am hoping Dundee will support us.”

Donna said the support provided by Kean’s Children’s Fund has been “absolutely fantastic.”

She added, “Mikey has been fighting the condition for the last five years, since he was 15 months old.

“He just wants to go and see an American policeman. That is all he has been talking about.

“Charlie has just been brilliant and he has managed to do so much in such a short space of time.”
