Dundee prepares to welcome Olympic torch relay

Dundee prepares to welcome Olympic torch relay

Locals are being advised to expect some disruption before and during the Olympic torch relay celebrations in Dundee on Tuesday.

With tens of thousands of people expected to converge to watch the ”once-in-a-lifetime” celebrations, people are also being asked to arrive early to avoid disappointment at events in City Square and Baxter Park.

Dundee City Council has issued advice to the public about roads and travel for the ”evening to remember,” with the Olympic torch relay’s arrival and programme of entertainment at City Square and Baxter Park.

The City Square event starts at 4pm and includes gymnasts, Active Schools, drummers, Mains of Fintry Pipe Band and Celtic rock band Gleadhraich.

The entertainment continues while the torch heads up to Baxter Park, where visitors can look forward to a performance by Scots singing star Emeli Sande.

The relay itself will start at the bottom of Commercial Street at 6.14pm on Tuesday.

Beforehand, the footway on the Tay Road Bridge will be closed from 5pm and restrictions will be in place for motorists as the convoy moves into the city.

The torch route will see it move on to City Square for 6.18pm.

Torchbearers will take the flame back along High Street, through Murraygate and Cowgate on to Princes Street, turning right on to Arbroath Road then into Baxter Park for 6.47pm.

The Baxter Park evening celebration will be open to the public from 4pm, with activities beginning at 5pm and Emeli Sande due on stage at 6.13pm before a speech by Lord Provost Bob Duncan prior to the torch arriving in the park.

Events at the park will come to a close at around 7.15pm.

Highlights also include a DJ set presented by street dancers Twist & Pulse.

No tickets are required for either the City Square or Baxter Park events, but people are being advised to come along as early as they can.

Parking restrictions will be in place throughout the afternoon on the torch route and there will be road closures for drivers, including at Cowgate, while the west car park at Sensation will be closed on the evening.

As the torch relay moves along its route, there will be delays for buses and general traffic which will be kept behind the convoy for its journey of around 30 minutes, with parking restrictions around Baxter Park. Following the arrival of the flame in the park, a cauldron will be lit at 6.50pm.

The lord provost said: ”This will be an evening to remember for everyone from Dundee who is involved in the displays, as well as the torchbearers.”
