Funding crisis forces Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Trust to cut back operations

A cash-strapped charity has been forced to cut services for injured animals across Tayside and Fife.
Shanwell Wildlife Rescue Trust in Broughty Ferry was set up in 2004 to help sick animals, but can no longer attract the funds to survive. The charity can now only afford to support marine rescues, as it announced it will be cutting up to 95% of its services.
Charity founder Gareth Norman said: ”It’s a necessary evil. Although it’s hard for people to swallow, it has been even harder for me as a founder.
”But we can’t argue with the figures and it’s either that or we shut totally.”
The charity was set up to provide frontline treatment for injured animals across the region, with a fully equipped rescue ambulance.
But Gareth said: ”We’ve been sitting with no funds to fuel our ambulance to go to jobs.
”We are spending nearly £550 trying to keep the ambulance on the road, and with that and rising vets’ bills and costs we just don’t have the funds.”
