A Dundee man who died while hillwalking in the Highlands has been named as 55-year-old Robert Tasker.
The NCR engineering technician was walking with a friend and family member near Ullapool on Saturday when he became ill.
A mountain rescue team was deployed to Meall nan Peitherin and launched a rescue operation lasting 11 hours. Tragically, it was unable to reach the party in time to save Mr Tasker’s life.
Mr Tasker, who lived in the West Kirkton area of the city, leaves his wife Gillian, daughter Kerry and son Steven. His family have been too upset to speak about the tragedy.
Weather conditions on Saturday meant an RAF helicopter deployed as part of the operation could only take the crew halfway up the mountain. The dozen-strong team had to make the rest of the journey on foot.
Mick Holmes, leader of the Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team, who were scrambled to the scene, said: ”We got the call about midday on Saturday and we were out there for about 11 hours.
”We had 12 members on the hill and we were assisted by an RAF helicopter but they couldn’t take us all the way up to the top because of the cloud.
”We had to walk most of the way up and then walk most of the way down again.
”There were three people in the party. The other two were escorted down by one of our members and the remaining gentleman was stretchered off the hill.”
A spokeswoman for Northern Constabulary said: ”Members of the MRT located the group. However the man, from Dundee, was found to have died from an apparent medical condition.”
NCR paid tribute to Mr Tasker.
Human resources manager Dick Todd said: ”Bob was an engineering technician in our research and development group in the NCR Discovery Centre in Dundee.
”He had been with the company for 11 years. He was a well liked and respected employee who will be sadly missed by all his friends and colleagues at NCR.”
