The number of passengers using Dundee Airport fell last month because fewer people travelled on the Belfast and Birmingham routes, according to the operator.
Figures released by Highlands and Islands Airports Ltd (Hial) showed 5,307 passengers used the airport in September, 1.7% down on the previous month.
The number of people flying to and from the city was up 1.8% in August, after consecutive falls in the previous six months.
A Hial spokesman said: ”After a return to growth in August, passenger numbers at Dundee fell by 1.7% last month, due to fewer passengers flying on Belfast and Birmingham routes.”
Hial handled 115,443 passengers across its 11 airports in September, a drop of 2.8% on the same month last year.
Managing director Inglis Lyon said: ”The economic climate is clearly having an impact on demand for air travel, particularly in the domestic market, which is the core of our business.
”As we approach the quieter winter season, we can expect further contraction in this key market.”
Hial operates a network of 11 airports across Scotland in Dundee, Barra, Benbecula, Campbeltown, Inverness, Islay, Kirkwall, Stornoway, Sumburgh, Tiree and Wick.
In 2011/12, the group handled almost 1.26 million passengers, a rise of 8.7% on the previous financial year.
Mr Lyon added: ”Across the Hial group, passenger numbers are continuing to grow on a year to date basis. However, there is no doubt that demand has slowed since the start of the year.”
