Opposition politicians in Dundee are demanding more answers from the city council over the controversy surrounding the delayed Olympia swimming pool project.
Following the news that the opening of the new Olympia will be delayed until next summer, Lib Dem Councillor Fraser Macpherson and Dundee West MP Jim McGovern have asked the council for assurances that the delay won’t adversely affect the waterfront development, including the V&A.
Mr Macpherson has also demanded an answer to what exactly has caused the six-month delay to the new pool construction.
He said last night: ”Once we cut away all the waffle from the city council’s ill-thought-out press release from last week on the Olympia delays, what is very clear is that the new Olympia will not open for some months yet and is well behind target.
”I understand the new target date is June 24 for the opening but what is not at all clear is how this impacts on the wider waterfront and V&A project.
”Clearly, demolition of the old Olympia is key to all this and it is now being delayed by having to stay open until at least June.
”I have sought clarification as to exactly what the impacts of this are from the council’s director of city development.
”I have also sought from the city architect a full explanation for the continuing delay as recently as October, opening by Christmas was being suggested as the likely date.
