A Fife soldier’s family are to attend a royal medal ceremony today, two months after he was killed by the Taliban.
Lance Corporal Liam Tasker’s mother, Jane Duffy, and other family members will be given the Elizabeth Cross and Memorial Scroll at the Defence Animal Centre in Melton Mowbray.
Liam (26), of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, was on duty with his springer spaniel Theo when he was shot by a sniper in Helmand province on March 1.
Theo, who had helped his handler find 14 bombs and weapon caches during their five-month tour of duty, perished several hours later.
Liam, of Tayport, was credited with having saved the lives of many colleagues.
The Elizabeth Cross, introduced in August 2009, is given to families of personnel killed on duty or by terrorism.
It is to be presented to Liam’s family by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne.
