Suspected second world war shell comes ashore at Tentsmuir

Efforts to destroy a shell at Tentsmuir beach in Fife were hampered by the tide on Wednesday.
The suspected second world war ordnance had been discovered by a member of the public near Shanwell Farm, at the Tayport end of the beach, in the afternoon.
A 50-metre cordon was set up and a Royal Navy bomb disposal team was called in from Faslane. Their aim was to tackle the device once the tide receded.
However, a Forth Coastguard spokeswoman said on Wednesday night that it appeared the tide had washed the bomb back out into the water.
It was later recovered and Royal Navy team took the suspected shell to a point above the high water mark. A 400-metre cordon was set up around it but the experts were not able to detonate it because the weather became foggy.
They were due to return at 8am today to deal with it, a coastguard team having remained there overnight.
