Drivers and fleet managers across Scotland who own or look after Mercedes Sprinter vans are being warned to make sure they are kept secure when not in use, following a spate of thefts of engine parts.
The thieves are taking the catalytic converters from these particular vans, as they are much easier to remove than from other commercial vehicles.
Inspector Ralph Maxwell, of Police Scotland, who is dealing with similar incidents in the Forth Valley Division, said: “The Mercedes Sprinter appear to be targeted due to their high ground clearance which makes it easy to remove bolt-on catalytic converters, as it contains expensive metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium, and costs around £1,800 to replace.
Anyone who has information about such thefts is asked to call Police Scotland on 101, or provide the information anonymously through Crime-stoppers on 0800 555 111.
