Designs showing what Kirkcaldy Museum, Art Gallery and Library could look like in years to come have been released by Fife Council.
The Courier previously revealed that the Kirkcaldy venue will undergo a £2.2 million transformation, with the new-look site scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2012.
While assurances were given that the nearby war memorial will be untouched, the plans would see the museum/art gallery and library integrated and a cafe built under the existing car park to the front of the B-listed buildings, opening out at the level of the war memorial gardens.
Although the facilities appear to be in one building, the museum was completed two years before the library.
The renovation would see the buildings linked with a shared reception and the creation of a staircase, while the cafe area would be freed up for gallery space.
During Tuesday’s housing and communities committee, Dorothy Browse, service manager for libraries and museums, conceded that the museum and art gallery in particular was in need of a revamp.
She said, “This will enhance what is one of the best, if not the best, small galleries in Scotland.”
