Adam Smith College students in Kirkcaldy are preparing to contribute to one of the biggest defence contracts to be completed in Fife.
Fabrication, welding and shipwright apprentices at the college are to start at Babcock in Rosyth once their training is complete. They will help to assemble the two new Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers being built for the Ministry of Defence.
But before getting their hands on the real thing, the students were set the task of building a three-metre model of the warship. Engineering apprentice William Bowman (18), of Buckhaven, said, “Working on this project has been fantastic-a great team building experience in every way. Being able to develop my skills has been a huge bonus and working with the rest of the team has been great from start to finish.”
The apprentices have been studying for the last seven months and Babcock has helped them gain some on-the-job training.
Jennifer Thompson-Young from the college said, “We are all hugely proud of this model.
“It’s a fantastic achievement for not only the apprentices and art and design students but also our lecturers who have guided the students to bring this project to life.
“Our apprenticeship programme has gone from strength to strength over the years and we are here to support companies who are thinking about employing an apprentice or simply want to find out more about how these training programmes can help their business.”
