Time running out to make housing benefit claim

Time running out to make housing benefit claim

Fifers are being advised to claim their discretionary housing payment now or face losing out.

The fund lessens the effect of the so-called bedroom tax by making up the difference between tenants’ housing benefit and their rent. Fife Council’s executive committee has agreed to provide an additional £407,000 to help everyone who qualifies.

But time is running out to claim and applications have to be made by March 31.

To date, the fund has helped more than 7,500 tenants whose housing benefit does not cover their rent, and the Scottish Government has confirmed it will continue to fully fund the scheme into 2015/16.

Tenants affected by the welfare reforms who have already claimed a DHP in 2014/15 will continue to have their awards paid for 2015/16 automatically.

Housing spokeswoman councillor Judy Hamilton said: Fife Council has worked extremely hard to mitigate the effects of the bedroom tax for tenants in Fife.

“Everyone affected by the bedroom tax qualifies for a DHP payment, but you need to apply. I’d encourage any tenant who hasn’t claimed yet to do so as soon as possible.”
